March 2017 Meeting of TÜKSİAD Board of Directors and Visit to Izmir

TÜKSİAD Board of Directors held its Board of Directors meeting in Izmir on 10-11 March 2017.

Thetwo-day program covered visits to TÜKSİAD sponsors and members' enterprises.

Gulfood 2017 Business Trip

TÜKSİAD visited Gulfood 2017, the world’s largest food fair, during a business trip to Dubai organized with the support of KOSGEB on 25 February-1 March 2017. The officials of Jafza (Jebel Ali Free Zone) gave de-tailed information about the free zone,followed by an informative meetingorganized by the Turkish Com-mercial Attaché in Dubai and the Dubai Turkish Business Councilfor food companies interested in establishing business contacts in Dubai and in B2Bs.

TÜKSİAD Board of Directors held the first meeting of 2017 in Ankara

The TÜKSİAD Board of Directors held its first meeting of 2017 on 21 January in Ankara.

The meeting opened with the evaluation of the activities carried out in December, followed by discussions on the organization of the 2017 Annual General Meeting, estimation of the domestic market size in 2016, establishment and activities of the Young TÜKSİAD Working Group, budget estimate and dues for 2017.

TÜKSİAD visit to Undersecretary of Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Livestock Nusret Yazıcı

On 7 November 2016, TÜKSİAD Chairman Hüsamettin Karaman, Board Member Onur Balcı, and members Mustafa Balcı and Fikret Bozkurt visited the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Lives-tock, Nevzat Yazıcı, accompanied by his Adviser Ali Yazıcı.

During the meeting, important agenda items of our sector were tackled such as the inaccurate and unreliable walnut and almond statistics, excessive capacity increase created by the new investments supported by the Agency for Agriculture and Rural Development (TKDK), the need for studies on seed harvesting and hybrid seeds, especially peanut and sunflower seeds, poor practices of walnut and almond garden investments made with state support and low productivity levels, and proposals were presented.

October 2016 Meeting of TÜKSİAD Board of Directors in Bursa

The TÜKSİAD Board of Directors held its October meeting in Bursa within a two-day program.

Within the scope of the program, TÜKSİAD members visited member companies İnegölTarım, Ela Kuruyemiş and Mustafa Sert Kuruyemiş in İnegöl and Yenişehir, on Friday, 7 October 2016.

The Board of Directors meeting was held on Saturday, 8 October 2016 at Tirilyalı Boutique Hotel located in Tirilye-Mudanya, owned by TÜKSİAD member Meraklılar Kuruyemiş. Following the evaluation of the activities carried out in August and September, the meetings to the ministries were scheduled for the upcoming term and preparations for TÜKSİAD's 2017 General Meeting were discussed.

August 2016 TÜKSİAD Board of Directors Meeting and Visit to the Black Sea Region

On 26-28 August 2016, TÜKSİAD's Board of Directors organized a Black Sea trip covering Trabzon, Giresun, Ordu and Samsun.

The programme included visits toTÜKSİAD members Demirciler Fındık Gıda, Ahmet Ak Gıda, Karadere Fındık, Uslu Fındık and Dost Fındık, and sponsors of past TÜKSİAD Annual General Meetings, Trabzon Tarım and Evrosan Makine.

In addition to our members and sponsors, we visited the Trabzon Commodity Exchange and DKC company which produces hazelnut, walnut butter and walnut oil.

The most prominent issue emerged during the meetings was the high level of hazelnut prices. The discus-sion revolved around other issues such as unrealistic pricing, the decrease in the consumption of hazelnut both in the domestic and international market due to their current prices, consumer preferencefor cheaper alternatives such as almonds and pistachios, high hazelnut prices leading the competitor countries to make new and intensive hazelnut investments and the risk of losing leadership and competitive advantage in the sector in the near future if policies that would ensure sustainability in production and priceare not developed.

Visit to Kadir Bal, General Director of Imports, Ministry of Economy

TÜKSİAD paid a visit to Kadir Bal, General Director of Imports at the Ministry of Economy.

TÜKSİAD Chairman Hüsamettin Karaman, Vice Chairman İbrahim Türkhan, Treasurer Gökyay Kepenek, members Mehmet Kapusuzoğlu and İsa Tunç and Secretary General Ceren Topcu attended the visit during which our views and demands regarding the customs benchmark prices for walnut and almond imports that exceed their respective market prices and the high customs tax rates applied to import these products.

The first Board meeting of the 2016-2018 term was held in Ankara

The TÜKSİAD Board of Directors for the 2016-2018term, elected at the 2016 Annual General Meting, heldits first meeting at the TÜKSİAD office in Ankaraon Saturday, 28 May 2016.

At the meeting, evaluations of the 2016 Annual General Meetingwere made;actual budget for the 2015-2016 term, budget estimate for the 2016-2017term, and the activities planned for 2016-2017 were dis-cussed.

TÜKSİAD 2016 Annual General Meeting was held on 12-15 May 2016 in Afyon

The TÜKSİAD 2016 Annual General Meeting was held on 12-15May, 2016 in Afyon with broad participation of TÜKSİAD members and sponsors.

Theeventopened with the Welcome Cocktail on12May, sponsored by the California Walnut Commission.

The TÜKSİAD 2016 Annual General Meeting started on Friday, 13 May with the Board of Directors visiting the sponsor stands and presenting plaques to the sponsors, followed by the opening speech of the 2012-2016 termChairmanMuammer Çaputçu. Çaputçu presented the appreciation plaques to the Board mem-bers he worked together at the end of his speech.

After the opening speech, the video of the activities of TÜKSİAD during the 2015-2016term and the presentation of Akyürek Technology, main sponsor of the TÜKSİAD 2016 Annual General Meeting, were screened.

Following the screenings, Dr. Ferda Seyhan shared with the participants the significant findings of the Research Project on the Determination of Shelf Life and Improvement of Quality of Sunflower Seed Consumed as Nuts, conducted by TÜKSİAD in collaboration with TUBITAK-MAM and finalised in March 2016.

On Friday, 13 Maybefore lunch, Dünya Daily columnist Dr. Rüştü BOZKURT gave a speech on 'Industry 4.0' which was mentioned in the opening speech by TÜKSİAD Chairmanand how it could be evaluated for our sector.

In the afternoon, the 'World and Turkish Economy Panel' was held with speakers Prof. Dr. Asaf Savaş Akat and Prof. Dr. Deniz Gökçe, sponsored by Kızıler Çelik Silo.

Within the scope of the TÜKSİAD 2016 Annual General Meeting, the official meeting was held on Saturday, 14 May 14, with the following agenda items:

1. Establishment of the Executive Board and authorisation of its members as signing authorities 

2. Moment of silence and the National Anthem 

3. Speech of the Chairman of the Board

4. Presentation and Discussion of the Annual Report of the Board of Directors 

5. Presentation and Discussion of the Income and Expenses Sheet

6. Presentation and Discussion of the Board of Auditor’s Report

7. Any other business

8. Discharging the members of the Board of Directors and the Board of Auditors 

9. Discussion on the potential changes in the Association Bylaw and authorities of the Board of Directors

10. Determination of the member fee to be valid from 2017

11. Election of the Association bodies

Following the election of the bodies of the association,Hüsamettin Karamangave a speech on behalf of the newly elected Board of Directors on the objectives set for the new term, and the activities the Boardwill focus on and realise.

The 2016 Annual General Meeting of TÜKSİAD closed with the Gala Dinner held on Saturday, 14 May, sponsored by AKY Technology. At the Gala Dinner, renowned musician Coskun Sabahtook the stage and the participants enjoyed the event.

April 2016 TÜKSİAD Board of Directors Meeting held in Ankara

The TÜKSİAD 2014-2016 term Board of Directors had its last meeting before the 2016 Annual General Meeting in the renovated office of TÜKSİAD in Ankara.

The most important agenda item during the meeting was the organisation of the TÜKSİAD 2016 Annual General Meeting.The other items were thefinal report of the Research Project on the Determination of Shelf Life and Improvement of Quality of Sunflower Seed, conducted in cooperation with TÜBİTAK-MAM, member acquisition, and budget and dues.

3rd Clustering Conference

The International Competitiveness Enhancement for the Nuts and Dried Fruit Sector Project carried out by TÜKSİAD since 2013with the support of the Ministry of Economywas among the 15 projects selected as best practices out of 161 ongoing projects.

In the 3rd Clustering Conference held on 19 February 2016, TÜKSİAD Project Manager Ceren TOPCU re-ceived the Good Practice Certificate from the Minister of Economy, Mustafa Elitaş.

During the 'Competitiveness Enhancement' session, a presentation was given on TÜKSİAD and the nuts and dried fruit sector, the activities carried out within the scope of the above-mentioned project, and the Technical ConsultancyProgramme on the Determination of Shelf Life and Improvement of Quality of Sunflower Seed.

London Nuts and Dried Fruit Sector Evaluationand B2Bs

Turkish nuts and dried fruits were promoted in London within the scope of the International Competitive-ness Enhancement for the Nuts and Dried Fruit Sector Project carried out by TÜKSİAD since 2013with the support of the Ministry of Economy.

Within the scope of London Nuts and Dried Fruit Sector Evaluationand B2Bs carried out on 7-11 February 2016, B2Bs were held on Monday, 8 February, with potential importers of Turkish nuts and dried fruits.

Within the context of 'London Nuts and Dried Fruit Sector Evaluation and B2Bs', a meeting was held on Monday, 8 February 2016 with Nick Thomas, Chairpersonof the National Dried Fruit Association UK, Vice Chairperson Ellie Osman and Secretary General Cathy Grant, to present the Turkish nuts and dried fruit sector,to provide detailed informationon the participating companies, and to improve trade between the members of the two associations.

On 9 February 2016, a meeting was held with Osman Cinik, Nuri Bulgurcu, Kifaye Kaya and Yavuz Sökmen from the Turkish-British Chamber of Commerce andIndustry to discuss points to consider when exporting to the UK, consumer demand, evaluations on the nuts and dried fruit sector and possible future activities for the promotion of Turkish nuts and dried fruits in the UK.

A visit was organized on 9 February to the premises of food wholesalers in North London, some of which had already participated in the B2Bs with Turkish companies held priorly.

Training onCommercial Intelligence and Customer Finding Techniques in Target Market

Within the scope of the International Competitiveness Enhancement for the Nuts and Dried Fruit Sector Project carried out by TÜKSİAD with the support of the Ministry of Economy, a training on Commercial Intelligence and Customer Finding Techniques in Target Market was organized on 23-24 January 2016 in Ankara.

December 2015 Meeting of TÜKSİAD Board of Directors and Visit to Gaziantep

TÜKSİAD Board of Directors held its lastmeeting of 2015 in Gaziantep within a two-day program on 11-12 December 2015.

Within the scope of the program, a visit was organized to Gaziantep University Naci Topçuoğlu Vocational School,Department of Nuts and Dried Fruit Production and Technologies on 11 December. Head of De-partment Hüseyin Tekin gave a presentation,followed by a visit to the nuts and dried fruit processing workshop established with the support of TÜKSİAD and a meeting with students.

Afterwards, the Board of Directors meeting was held during which TÜKSİAD 2016 Annual General Meeting organization, and trainings, seminars and international business trips to be held in 2016 were discussed.

On Saturday, 12 December, a visit was organized to Gatem Fıstıkçılar Sitesi and meetings were held with TÜKSİAD members who are located in the site.

Seminar: Walnut Trade in the World andin Turkey

TUKSİAD Chairman Muammer Çaputçugave a presentation during the seminar "Walnut Trade in the World and in Turkey" organized by the California Walnut Commission on Tuesday, 24 November2015 in Ankara.

Çaputçu shared his evaluation of TÜKSİAD's activities, the nuts and dried fruit sector and the walnut sector with the participants.

Commercial Attaché of the U.S. Embassy in Turkey Elizabeth Leonardi gave the opening speech, Jack Jacob and Feray Alpaypresented information about walnut industry in California and the activities ofthe California Walnut Commission in Turkey, Secretary General of Tüm Gıda Foreign Trade AssociationMelahat Özkan and food engineer Çiğdem Yalçın from Agrolab Gıda informed the participants about the nutrition facts and storage conditions of walnuts.

Pumpkin Seed Consultation Meeting

TÜKSİAD organized a Pumpkin Seed Consultation Meeting in Nevşehir on Saturday, 14 November2015 in cooperation with the Nevşehir Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and the Nevşehir and Kayseri Com-modity Exchanges.

Following the opening speech of Nevşehir Chamber of Commerce and Industry Chairman Seyit İnce, TÜKSİAD ChairmanMuammer Çaputçu gavea presentation on the activities of TÜKSİAD and evaluations of the nuts and dried fruit sector in general, and pumpkin seed industry in particular.

Afterwards, the participants of the meeting put forward the current problems of the pumpkin seed industry and their solution proposals.

TUBITAK-MAM Seed Meeting

During the meeting, the quality and shelflife of current seeds were evaluated within the scope of the finalised research on peanuts,and the ongoing one on sunflower seeds, conducted by TÜKSİAD in cooperation with TÜBİTAK-MAM Food Institute. The main findings were the tendency for seed rancidity for both products and the consequent need for future studies on seed rehabilitation.

Accordingly, a meeting was held on 3 November 2015 with the members of the Food and Gene Engineering and Microbiology Institutes in TÜBİTAK-MAM Gebze campus.

The meeting opened with the presentation given by Şaban Tekin, Director of the Gene Engineering and Microbiology Institute, about the structure of the Institute and the projects carried out.

Following the presentation, the need to set the framework for seed studies to be carried out by both our members and researchersand the steps to be taken were discussed thoroughly.

After the meeting, a visit was organised to the laboratories of the Food Institute. Ferda Seyhan gave information about the research activities of the Food Institute.

ANUGA 2015 Business Trip

A delegation of 34 members representing 11 TÜKSİAD member firmsvisited the ANUGA Food Fair held in Cologne, Germany, on 9-14October2015.

Exhibitors and visitors not only from Europe where the fair takes place but also from the rest of the world showed high interest in the world's largest food fair.

September 2015 TÜKSİAD Board of Directors Meeting and Visit to WorldFood Istanbul

The TÜKSİAD Board of Directors held its September meeting on 5 September 2015 in Istanbul. After the meeting, the Board andseveral TÜKSİAD members visited the WorldFood Istanbul Fair, where significant companies of the food and nuts and dried fruit sectorswere exhibitors. Evaluations were made about the fair and the industry at the exhibition stands.
